October 7th and October 9th DreamHaven Books will be exhibiting at Gaylaxicon, the “annual science fiction, fantasy, gaming and comics convention for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people and their friends”!
We are pleased to be bringing books by several local attending authors (Eleanor Arnason! Naomi Kritzer! Catherine Lundoff! Lyda Morehouse!) as well as many other fabulous guests being brought in by the convention. We’re also planning on having a Gaylaxicon-only-special-sale on mass market paperbacks – 25% off of cover price!
On Saturday, Oct 8th the table at Gaylaxicon will be closed, as Alice heads back to keep the shop open, and Greg trots over to the MN State Fairground for the one-day MSP ComiCon. If there’s anything you were hoping to see at the convention on Friday, let me know and I can bring it with on Sunday.
Hope to see you there!
DreamHaven Books will be exhibiting at NerdCon Stories on Friday, Oct 14th and Saturday Oct 15th.
We had a fabulous time selling books there last year, and have stocked up this time with even more copies and more authors than before.
Greg and Lisa will both be there helping you to nab that treasured book in time to take it over to the Signings area and meet the author.
Please join us Thursday, October 20th, 2016 at 6:30 PM for a reading with Kathe Koja, author of the Bram Stoker and Locus Award-winning first novel The Cypher; the adult novels Bad Brains, Skin, Strange Angels (a Deathrealm Award winner), Kink, the Under the Poppy trilogy (which includes Under the Poppy, The Mercury Waltz, and The Bastards’ Paradise), young adult novels: Straydog, Buddha Boy, The Blue Mirror, Talk, Going Under, Kissing the Bee, and Headlong; the story collection Extremities; and many uncollected stories.
Her novels and stories often concern characters who have been marginalized by society, and the transcendence and/or disintegration that follows their social isolation.
Due to an unexpected development, Rez will be rescheduling his reading for later in November. We will keep you posted when we have more information.
On Wednesday, October 26, JOHN CALVIN REZMERSKI reads his poetry.
Mr. Rezmerski was born in Pennsylvania, and again in Ohio, then again in Kansas, and three times more in Minnesota. By some accounts he has three lives left, but he is not taking any bets because he doesn’t believe in cats. He is a member of Lady Poetesses from Hell by virtue of the fact that he channels Grace Lord Stoke (via email), from whom he has learned a great deal. He has published 20 books, chapbooks, and anthologies, including _The Frederick Manfred Reader_, a screenplay, and three plays. He has performed his work for schools, libraries, bookstores, science fiction conventions, clubs, professional organizations, senior centers, museums, festivals, fairs, coffee houses, bars, and on television, and on radio, including National Public Radio’s Wha’d Ya Know?, and collaborated with painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, dancers, theatrical troupes, and scientists. Over 35 years, he taught creative writing, journalism, linguistics, science fiction, and storytelling at Gustavus Adolphus College. His poetry includes 22 from TOTU and Breaking the Rules: Starting with Ghazals.
He will be reading a single long poem–the complete text of his recently published chapbook, “Cataloging the Flow: Elegy” published by Red Dragonfly Press.
You can learn more about him at his website.

DreamHaven Books, in association with the dark fantasy convention, Arcana, is proud to present S.T. Joshi in a talk about his work and interest in “The Dark Fantastic”.
S. T. Joshi is an author, editor and one of the foremost authorities on H.P. Lovecraft and other authors of Weird Fiction. From Mr. Joshi’s website – “S. T. Joshi (b. 1958) is a leading authority on H. P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, H. L. Mencken, and other writers, mostly in the realms of supernatural and fantasy fiction. He has edited corrected editions of the works of Lovecraft, several annotated editions of Bierce and Mencken, and has written such critical studies as The Weird Tale (1990) and The Modern Weird Tale (2001). His award-winning biography, H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (1996), has already become a collector’s item. An expanded and updated version, I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft, was published in 2 volumes in 2010. But critical, biographical, and editorial work on weird fiction is only one aspect of Joshi’s multifaceted output. A prominent atheist, Joshi has published the anthology Atheism: A Reader (2000) and the anti-religious polemic, God’s Defenders: What They Believe and Why They Are Wrong (2003). He has also compiled an important anthology on race relations, Documents of American Prejudice (1999).
Joshi has compiled bibliographies of H. P. Lovecraft (1981; revised 2009), Lord Dunsany (1993), Ramsey Campbell (1995), Ambrose Bierce (1999), Gore Vidal (2007), and H. L. Mencken (2009). He has edited Supernatural Literature of the World: An Encyclopedia (2005), Icons of Horror and the Supernatural (2006), and Icons of Unbelief (2008). His recent monographs include The Angry Right (2006), Junk Fiction: America’s Obsession with Bestsellers (2009), and The Unbelievers: The Evolution of Modern Atheism (2011). He has also published two works of detective fiction and has written a supernatural novel centering around H. P. Lovecraft, The Assaults of Chaos.”
Local author Naomi Kritzer will be in the store Sunday, December 15th to read from her work and sign copies of her latest novel, Catfishing on CatNet, and her 2017 collection of stories, Cat Pictures Please and Other Stories. The title story of the collection won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 2016, and was the basis for the world in which her latest novel is set.
Copies of both books will be available for purchase.
