Words Over Windows: In the Aftermath of the Killing of George Floyd by David Dyer-Bennet
Trade Paperback – Blaisdell Press – Nov 2020 – 106 pages
The murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 has left an indelible mark on Minneapolis, the United States, and the world. It has brought the sometime fraught relationship of People of Color and the Police into sharper focus. The subsequent protests and then riots led to the loss of hundreds of businesses to vandals and fire while hundreds of others protected their properties by boarding up their windows. This left an intriguing series of canvases which were quickly used to express outrage and concern over Floyd’s death.
David Dyer-Bennet spent several days after the unrest documenting the many colorful and thought-provoking paintings and murals. Many of these ephemeral documents of a special time may have been lost forever if not for David’s dedicated camera-work. This collection of images, from the simple to the sublime, is a remarkable testament to a horrible event which may eventually lead us into a better understanding of our world and ourselves.
